Founded in 1987, COOPLAG Cooperative Investment and Thrift Society Ltd was established to serve the financial and welfare needs of employees within the Shell Companies in Nigeria.

Over the years, the Society has undergone a strategic transformation, evolving from a traditional thrift system into a diversified financial and investment institution with expanding capabilities.
A defining milestone was achieved in 2025 with the inclusion of employees from Renaissance Africa Energy Company, marking a new phase of growth, inclusivity, and institutional repositioning.
This transition gave rise to the COOPLAG identity reflecting a broader vision, expanded reach, and stronger ambition.

COOPLAG Cooperative Investment and Thrift Society Ltd is a duly registered entity under the Nigerian Co-operative Societies Act 98 of 1993 and is supervised by the Federal Department of Cooperatives.
The Society began operations in Lagos in 1987, under the laws of the Lagos State Department of Cooperatives within the State Ministry of Agriculture. It was midwifed by the then Human Resources Department and Workers — Unions of Shell Companies in Nigeria.
In 1990, the Society was formally registered as Shell (Lagos Island) Staff Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society Limited. It was later renamed The Shell Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society, a name it retained until 2008.
Following its transition to operate under the Federal Department of Cooperatives in 2008, the Society adopted a new name — The Shell Staff Cooperative Investment and Thrift Society Limited — to reflect its expanded scope of operations.
This transition allowed the cooperative to broaden its financial mandate and better serve members across different regions in Nigeria under federal supervision.
In 2025, as part of its strategic growth and in response to the post divestment transition, the Society extended membership to employees of Renaissance Africa Energy Company.
To reflect this broader mandate, It was renamed COOPLAG Cooperative Investment and Thrift Society Ltd, with its headquarters in Lagos and branch offices in Warri and Port Harcourt. Today, COOPLAG serves a growing membership base of over 3,000 individuals, offering services primarily in savings, loans, and investments.
The Society is governed by a 7-member Management Committee, which serves as its Board and is chaired by the President. Members of the Committee are elected by the general membership and serve an initial term of two years, with eligibility for re-election for an additional two-year term.
The COOPLAG Cooperative Investment and Thrift Society Limited was founded to empower members through strategic savings, financial growth, and wealth-building opportunities. Over the years, it has evolved into a leading cooperative institution in Nigeria, driving large-scale investments in real estate, finance, and member welfare. From humble beginnings, COOPLAG has become a trusted name synonymous with integrity, innovation, and impact — championing cooperative excellence through visionary leadership and solid governance.
We are driven to be Africa's leading cooperative society in wealth creation and sustainable development, and to empower members through innovative financial solutions, investments, and value driven partnerships.
